Cup Horses Worked Well At Awapuni
Misty rain fell during yesterday's semi-finals at Awapuni, "but the going was good and there were a numher of useful gallops. The coprse proper was open and the trestles were forty feet out. The outstanding trials were those of the five Manawatu Cup candidates, Imperial, Yasda, Audacious, Emerge and Lord Holland. AI1 worked well and they will be in great order for Saturday's race Yasda (V. J. SeJlars) worked over a mile and a quarter a'nd dvas home strongly in 42 to complete in- 2.18 3-5. Emerge (I. Cole) and Audaeious (J. Hely) were going sniootliiy togetlier at tlie end 6f tlieir mile and a quarter and their time was .2.18 2-5 and they broke 42 for the last' three. Both raeed well at Woodville and they have done well sin'ce. - -- - • Imperial (B. .Cpllins) worked well over a mile in 1.52'«2-5 hnd he ran the last three in 40 3-5. His winning pcrforman^e at Otaki, was most attraetive and he is likely to be one of the favourites for the Cup. Lord Holland (N. Cavaney) drew away froin Kippo (8. Waddell) at the end of a mile, the last seven in 1.41 2-5, but the pace was reallj- on only over the last furlong. Ngakoti (W. L. Aitken) and Mission (E. Rout) ran their scven in 1.39 2-5 and they ran the last three in 40 2-5. Yoltaic (J. Harris) worked smoothlv over seven from the barrier, but in running the distance in 1.39 he was not out against the watch. It is reported that he might not race on the first day at Manawatu. One of the best sevens of the morning was that of Mesallianee (Broughton). He ran the distance in 1.37, the last three in 41 3-5. Trafalgar Day (G. R. Tattersall) covered seven in 1.39 2-5, eoming hbme the last five in 1.9 3-5. Battle Strife (Tattersall) and Giggle (D. Harris) were home well in "41 to complete seven in 1.38. Harleyholm (J. Harris) and Boyhood (Hely) galloped a mile in 1.54 3-5, the pace being steady throughout. Fox Flame (Aitken) took 1.50. There were some interesting trials over five. Gav Stroller (Broughton) was out first to run the distance in 1.7, and he could have done better than 41 2-5 for the last three. La Modelle (Broughton) and Kurnari (Tattersall) broke 1.8 after running the ; last three in 40 1-5. Deseado (Cavaney) and Nerisser (Tattersall) were going smoothly after : their five in 1.8 1-5. Balcairn (T. Poad) and Great Success (Cole) took 1.8 2-5, and LadY 1 Aurora (Tattersall) and Night Yalour (Cavaney) 1.8.
