Pity The Poor Notoris! • "Having hidden 'himself away •for 45 years, the notornis has escaped two wars and a depression, he has never heard of a Nazi, knoiws nothing about the •Labour Government, has never seen a Fair Isle jers'ey and has never heard of a pressure cooker," was one of the laughter provoking remarks made to the; pupils of the Palmerston North Girls' High School by Mrs. H. C. D. Somerset, ■in her address at the prize-giving ceremony. Threat To Pig Club Town milk supply is threatening •the existence of the Levin . Pig Club because of the inroads bf the supply demands on the keeping of •pigs in the area. Tnis was revealed to the Wellington District Pig Council's meeting by the supervisor (Mr. L. L. Marsdon) . Fully 75 per cent. of the club memberS were on town supply during certain periods of the year to the detriment of pig keeping, he said. A meeting had been held to discuss winding up the club but no action had been taken.
Rare Hawaiian Cloak A prized addition to the exhibits at, the Auckland museum is a Hawaiian chieftain's scarlet and •yellow cloak, made from thousands of tiny feathers, laced on to a net •foundation. .. Hawaiians stopped making these cloaks more than 100 years ago, and the art has died. They were worn with a crested feathered helmet on State occasions, and also in battle. Hawaiian bird catchers. using the net and bird lime, snared thousands of brightly-coloured birds of the 'honey-eating family, removed 12 to 20 choice feathers from under the tail and wings, and then freed the birds. It has been sstimated that it took as many as 10,000 birds ... to make one cerenonial cloak. The cloak was )btained from the Cambridge Jniversity museum.
