Rep. Batsmen Made Good Showing At Palmerston On Saturday
(By "Not Out") Firstl.y congratulations to our ^epreseritative Jbatsmen. on their good scoring last Saturday. F. Baumber (8i) ahd Galloway (52 not out) were two of the good scorers. A disquieting featute of the match was the two ruri outs — Rifee, a jproven batsmhn, and Wils'on, an up-and-c'omin'g batsrrian, 'to wh'om we were looking for a good score. . '
Dome, the College batsman who) opened with F. Baumber, did quite well for his first rep. game, staying' with his partner until a fair! dpening score had been made.j Gardiner, another young player, I took a wicket and it is hoped that the experience gained will help to make both these young players an assfet to Horowhenua rep. cricket. The next representativfe fixture will ,be looked to with interest. While writing of the representative match, I must disagree with the newspaper report which indi'cated.that Manawatu were on top. At no stage did Horowhenua lose a grip of the game and Mana- 1 watu were probably very worried | when the local boys put on over 200 ruhs for five wickets. Manawatu did not reach 200 for the loss of their five wickets and, although they scored at , a faster rate, this is accounted for by the order in which the teams batted. Last Saturday play locally was 1 stiopped by rain. In the WeraroaCollege game, Weraroa notched 107 runs, mainly because Ellis took advantage of a College let-up and scored 50 in quick time. Mc- | Lean and Southcombe were the riiost impressive bowlers, the latter keepin'g very low and causing the batsmen trouble. -I'm waiting with interest to See this bowler on a hard, fast wicktt. Old Boys and Foxton met on No. 1 wicket and this match. as with the one on No. 2, ended in a draw wnen rain stopped play. Old Boys were not in a very good position when play was stopped, as Foxton had about 200 runs on the board, and I don't think the Old Boys t'eam had the batsmen to get the ruhs required in the time. Foxton, in the latter half of their innings, scored at a very rapid pace. Rodgers set the ball rolling with some
hard, clean hitting and Ryburn carried on. g'iving the fieldihg team a torrid time while he col'ected 60 odd runs. Boyvlers bowl either to collect a wicket or to keep the runs' down and as long as their deliveries come within the definition of "fair play" remafks about their efforts are unwarranted and not in true "cricket spirit." Levin went down • narrowly to Paraparaumu. Levin were without Lambert, Hudson, Galloway and F. Baumber, and tney would be missed. I'm sure all crieketers join with me in wishing K. Hudson a speedy recovery. He had his troublfesome knee operated on last Monday and reports are that he came through the operatioh well. Since starting these notes, I've heard that the Horowhenua fielding in Palmerston North was not the best. When will players reaN ise that good fielding is just as important as any other phase of cricket? No matter how good a batsman or bowler a player may be, unless he is a good fieldsman he will not make thq grade in first class cricket. Periiaps the selectors could help by pointing out to some players that they will not be considered unless they show that their fielding is up to standard. Perhaps then the point may be driven home more forcibly. Finally, an incident from Saturday. As a bowler was running up to the wicket to deliver the ball, his captain stopped him and appealed. to the umpire. The umpire gave the batsman out lbw on the previous ball bowled. Lengthy was the discussion on how long an appeal could be delayea. The ruling is, "The appeal shall be done prior to the deliverv of thfe next ball and before time is called." Therefore, the appeal was in order.
