Carnival Queens Presented

The Civic Theatre, Otaki, drew a packe'd- house on Tuesday night, when the proceeds of the picture entertainment were generous'y donated by the management to the Otaki War Memorial Fund. The opportunity was given for the five queen candidates who will be contesting the forthcoming cariiival to be presented to the public. Prior to the interval the Mayor, (Mr. C. F. Atmore, addressed the audience, thanking them for supporting the effort .and for the generosity Slfown earlier when the initial appeal was launched. He pai'd tribute to Otaki Amusements, Ltd. for making the nett proceeds of the entertainment available, and explained that the carnival would^mark the start of this seaison's effort for the War Memorial Fund. Mr. Atmore added that it iwas hoped to raise sufficient to | build a suitable gymnasium and utility hall, and to procure further sports areas.

Mr. Atmore tnen presented m turn the Farmers', Citizens', Textiles', Maori and Sports' Queens, wisning them all good luck and assuring them of his support and that of the audience in p'acing them all as near to the top of the poll as possible. Applause followed the introduction of each of the queen candidates, who were hlso presented with very beautiful bouquets, as was Mrs. M. Richards, who had played no small part in providing the opportunity given. The queens, all well-known local girls, looked particulary charming in their simple frocks, adorned with ribbon sashes depicting the inierest they represented. Their maids of honour, who were in the main similarly attired added lustre to a quite colourful setting. Tne queens, in order of presen- ' tation, their maids of honour and - executive personnel are as follows: —

Farmers': M'ss Edna Taylor; maids, Misses, Nancy Verrant, Barbara Monk, Myreen Cobb and Joan Hayward; chairman, Mr. J. Miller; secretary, Mis§ B. Jarman; treasurer, Mr. F. Taylor. Citizens': Miss Emma Snowdon; t maids, Misses Mary McBeth, C„nnie Reckin, Aileen Cole and Frances Scatchard; chairman, Mr. J. Barnett; secretary, Mrs. ,Colin Taylor; treasurer, Miss W. Dunearn Textiles': Miss Pat. Ralph; maids, Misses Jeari Andrews, Val, Bayne, Avis Connor and Marie Cootes; chairman, Mr. K. Hager; secretary, Mrs. I. Cross, treasurer. Mr. R. Ciark. Maori: Miss Makuini RansfLeid; maids, Misses Aroha Jacobs, Ini Baker, Bella Reweti and Alics Ropata; chairman, Mr. A. Knox; secretary, Mr. P. Baker; treasurer, Mr. H. W. Hakaraia. Sports': Miss Maureen Thomas; maids, Misses Val. Boggs, Bridgie Gordon, Shirley Smith and Nahleen WaRon; chairman, Mr. W. Connor; secretary, Mr. C. Pussell; treasurer, Mr. R. Taucher. There seems little doubt that the result of the entertainment will be most gratifying and that the War Memorial Fund will benefit considerably. Coming Activities Following the presentation of queen candidates, numerous activities are now being arranged. The first shot in the campaign will be fired on Friday afternoon, when jffie Citizens' Queen supporters will hold a bazaar, in the Anglican HaU. A well known celebrity' in Father Christmas will be in attendance. On Saturday the Farmers' Queen Committee will hold a dance in the Manakau Hall.
