Bishop Bennett's Fears For Maoris' Future
NAPIER, Dee. 6. Coneern at the possible effee.t on the Maori -people of the liquor law amendment, was expressed today by the Bishop of Aotearoa, the Right Rev. F> A. Bennett. "I feel very anxious and perturbed about the future of the Maori raee now that the proteeting legislation regarding intoxieating liquor for the Maori, has been removed," he said. "Those of us who remember the bad. oid days.when there were no. restrictions, when barrels of liquor were brought into native settlements and when men, women and children were to be seen .at many tangis in a state of intoxieation, feel very anxious and nervous about the future. ' ' Asked whether the Government might not have done something to destroy mueh' of its good work for the Maori, Bishop Bennett appealed to those who had the highest interests of the Maori at heart, to see that strict meaSures were taken to ensure that the growing population in native settlements were preserved from the far-reaehing eft'eets of sueh a dangerous traffic.
