Never Been In Mexico Says Sir Bernard
MELBOURNE, Dec. 4. Sir Bernard Freyberg exploded a-30-year-old legend when he confessed to a reeeption by the Returned Soldiers' Imague tliat he had "never been in •Mexico in his iife." Thousands of words had been written ■in books, magazines and the world's Press about Gcn'eral Freyberg 's exploits in the Mexican Revolutioh in 1914. The story, witbout e'mbellishrnents, was that in. 1913, when he was a 24-year-old dental student, nSir Bernard signed aboard a ship as a stoker and set sail for^Mexico. In Mexico he was supposed to, have offered his services to General Huerta and when Gencral Huerta refused them to have joined the rebel leader, Pancho Villa. Speakers at the Returned Soldiers' League»reception made copious references to these reported exploits. The senior vice-president (Mr. I. Wiison) said: " As for Mexico, Your Excellency, if tliere had been no war we don't doubt you would have started one of your ownV' Sir Bernard, in reply, said that a lot of the remarks madc by the ' speakers had been founded on fact, " but I would like to sav that I haVe never been in - Mexico.
