WELLINGTON, Dec. 3. Failurc to pay the Coninnssioner oi Taxes sums amouuting to £6516 was mentioned by counsel for the Commissioner when Cainpbell 's Bawmills Ltd.. [ t'pper liutt, faeed eleven c-liarges in the .Wagistrate 's Court, Wellington, today of knowingly applying sums deducted from wages as Soeial becurity tax other than by paving tlieni to the Commi.ssioner. The two prineipkl charges re lating to the iinancial years ended Mareh 31, 1945 and 194(5, involved sums of £997 12s 2d and £841 7s 3d respce tively, and tlie other nine charges rulated to individual sums included in those totals. Mr. W. R. Birks appear ed for the Comniissioner and Mr. A. J. Alazengarb i'or tlie comnanv.
In admitting the oifences Mr. Mazengarb told the Court that tlie oiuission to pay over tlie dues had oceurred vvlien the direetor io nliarge had lost all his staff duriiig tlie war. He had in most of the casos plaeed the necessary inoney for the payments in envelopes in the safe. From tlie time the accountaiit had returned from the Forees the inoney had been properly paid over in that jiroper stamps liad been attached to the wages boolts. Mr. Birks said that tliough the charges laid related to only two finaneial years the actual trouble has extended over 5 years and the sum not paid over was £651(5. With the 19 per cent penalty ihe total becauie £7 1 (»7. Fines of £50 with Court and solicitors' costs' were imposed on each of the principal charges, the remaining nine i being withdrawn.
