Demonstration By Reds Falls Flat

An attempt by Communists to at'range a mass demonstration in protest against increases in trara and bus fares and living costs generally, failed tfiis af ternoon wben onlv a few hundred people attended a rally in the Domain, instead of 20,000 who were expeeted. From the Communist viewpoint the rally was the quietest and most unsuccessful ever held. The Htate 2ilmiste'r for Prices, Mr. F. J. Finnafl, sharply refused to reeeive the Communist. organised demonhtration, stating: "I received a deputation on the matter after the demonstration of some weeks ago. In this ease I tliink it is a stupid waste of time for propaganda purposes. These people w otiki be helping me in keeping prices down if thev spent more time at work in an etfort to increase production. " Watersiders held a stopwork meeting with the pqr-mission of the port committee but decTded to report baelc for work without going to the demonstration. The stoppage was ealled bv twelve militant unions but was not authorised by the Labour Couneil.
