School Jubilee Arrangements
Some 25 ex-pupils and other interestqd persons attended a meeting in the school on Monday evening to make preliminary arrangements for the forthcoming diamond. jubilee of the Shannon School. 7 For the earlier part of the even-' ;ng the chair was taken by Mr. A. Jeffrey, chairman Of the School Committee. However, it was decided to1 elect a separate chairman for the jubilee committee and on • the motion of; Mr. A. Jeffrey, Mr. R. J. Law was appointed. Mr. Law was the chairman of the school golden jubilee in 1939. , In taking the chair, Mr. Law extended thanks to the meeting for appoincing him to the office and asked the help of those present in making the function just as successful as the jubilee ten years ago. Mr F. O. Burtt suggested that Mr. J. T. Bovis be appointed to act as joint secretary with Mr. L. J. Bowler to the committee. This was agreed to. Mr. Bovis also played a prominent part in the golden jubilee wheri he held the position as secretary. Mr. Law then produced notes which were used ten years ago and these proved very valuable in making the preliminary arrangements for the coming function. Mr. Bcfvis also had with him some valuable information in connection with the golden jubilee celebrations, and a full outline of that function was given by Mr. Bovis. Mr. Law stated that it was under- I stood that the Shannon Football [ Club was also holding its jubilee celebrations next year and it had 'been more or less agreed to combine the two. The tentative date • agreed upon for the celebrations was King's Birthday weekend, commencing 011 Friday, June 3. It is also expected that some function will be arranged for Monday, June 6, possibly by the football club. It was agreed that Friday afternoon should be set aside for a special ! entertainment - for the present pupils, with a combined ball on the Friday evening. Saturday I afternoon will take the form of a
. —n—n — roll call and other entertainment will be arranged. On Saturday evening the. jubilee dinner will be held. It is possible that special church services will be conducted in the various churches on Sunday. Mr. Law stated that an effort would be made to encourage the •business people to make a, special jubilee week in their shops, while the Mayor (tMjr. D. A. Fitzgerald) said tliat he was sure arrangements could be made for deeorations for the town. It was to be hoped that the whole district would enter into the celebrations knd that several old residents, whether ex-pupils of the school or not, would be in Shannon for the jubilee. It was agreed that circular letters be despatched to as many expupils, teachers and committeemen as possible, and a committee comprising Messrs. J. T. Bovis, F. O. Burtt, D. Aitchison, D. A. Fitzgerald, " Mrs. S. L. Graham and Miss Staff was set up to arrange and despatch the circulars. A meeting of this committee has been arranged for Thursday, December 9, at 7 p.m. in the Oouncil Chambers to undertake the work of compiling a list. of those to be circularised. A general committee was then set up, the members of which are: Messrs. R. J. Law (chairman), L. Bowldr, J. T. Bovis, A. E. Jeffrey, S Free, E. Barber, Mesdames W. Easton, C. Stern, S. L. Graham, K. Mitchell, S. Morrison, Miss Crowther, Messrs. F. Bradey, R. Vinsen, F. J. Lucinsky, R. R. Lind, F. O. Burtt, K. Mitchell, G. G. Mitchell, A. Richards, D. Aitchison' and D. A. Fitzgerald. It was then agreed to appoint the chairman of the various subcommittees and also one or two members. These sub-committees
will be added to later and tney will act independently on their tasks, and report from time to time to the general committee. The chairmen of the sub-commit-tees will-be added to the general committee. The sub-committees set up were •as follows: — C-hildren's entertain- • inent: Mr. A. Jeffrey and the school teachers; jubilee ball: Mr. ,F- J. Lucinsky (chairman , Mr. W. Moynihan and Mesdames W. Barton, C. Stern, S. L. Graham and G. : Moss, and the football .club will be approached to appoint representatives on this committee; jubilee banquet : Mr. R. R. Lind (chairman), Messrs. E. Barber, S. Free, K. Mitchell, Mesdames Easton and Stern; advertising committee: Mr. T S. Downes. Messrs. J. T. Bovis, F. O. Burtt and T. S. Downes were appointed to go into the possibility of having a souvenir programme printed. Tentative bookings v/ere left in the hands of Mr. : L. J. Bowler. Messrs. Law, Lucin- : sky and Bovis were appointed to meet the football club in connection with arrangements for combining the jubilees. It was decided that the date of the next general meeting be left in the hands of the chairman and secretary to. arrange. ■ A very successful meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the chair.
