College Students Speak To Rotarians
Two students at Horowhenua College", Warren Travers atid Allan Armstrong,' provided the interest ai? the Levin Rotary Club's weekly luncheon yesterday with short talks, which were delivered in eloquent style and which showed them to be well informed about their subjects. Introducing them, Mr. N. A. Byrne referred to criticisms made of the 'curriculum in a modern secondary school and of the educational system of today. People were frequently heard to say that it "is not like it was in our day." One of the aims in secondary education today was to give the scholar confidence .in facing life, said Mr. Byrne, and a great deal was being done to foster in them an ability to express themselves. The talks the two boy's would give would indicate what was being achieved in that direction and explain why certain cuKural sub- ' jects were now - compulsorily included in the curriculum. " - Warren Travers spoke on gold mining in New Zealand, dealing " with the "lure of this intrinsic motai" to individuals after it was first discovered in 1860 and tracing the development of mining operations to the present day. Allan Armstrong chose the noted New ^Zealand authoress, Katherine Mansfield, as his subject and gave a comprehensive outline of her life until her untimely death at the age of 34 years. Proposing a vote of thanks to the two youthful speakers, Mr. F. H. Hudson said that they had brought members into close contact with the youth of today and in particular the educative influences which surrounded them. The addresses given by the boys had impressed him with the great scope for expression which the English language provided, and with the wealth of opportunity : which lay before the youth of to'day ,in the Dominion's educational iinstitutions. The educational sys- »*- tem gave wonderful facilities even though it might have some weaknesses. Members would feel proud of the bqys for the ability they "" had" displayed in their-. talks.
