Shannon School Matters
The November meeting of the Shannon School Committee was held recently, when Mr. A. E. Jeffrey (chairman) presided over Messrs. L. J. Bowler (secretary) , E. H. Barber, F. E. Bradey, S. J. Free, F. J. Lucinsky, R.-E. Vinsen and Mesdames C. Stern and W. Easton. The headmastdr (Mr. F. O. Burtt) was also ih attendance. Routine business ineluded the finalising of arrangements for the calf club judging, which will be conducted in the school grounds on Friday, November 26, Mr. Lucinsky being appointed marshall for the proceedings. It was stated that the school's new public address system would be in use and this should prove a valuable asset. It was agreed that, as in past years, a cordial invitation to parents and the public should be extended". A handsome cup, donated by the Wellington Meat Export Co., will be competed for for. the first time this year. This trophy was donated for competition for the best fat lamb taken straight from the paddock. It is expected that entries will be very heavy and there should be keen competition in this section. Arrangements are in hand for the holding of the school diamond jubilee and it was decided to liold a meeting of all interested persons 011? Monday, November 15, at the school, commencing at 8 p.m. The last school jubilee wag.a very succesaful function Aand it is hoped that the public and old pupils will attend the meeting in full force to make the diamond jubilee even a better function. Messrs. Vinsen and Free were appointed visiting' committeemen for the month. Letters of appreciation are to be sent to Mr. T. E. Harrison for his assistance with bulldozing work carried out at the school grounds. Messrs. F. Powell and F.' E. Bradey were thanked for their donations to the calf club. In presenting his report for the month of October, the headmaster, Mr. F. O. Burtt, stated that the roll at the end of the month was 154 boys and 142 girls, a total of 296 pupils. "There have been eight admissions and one withdrawal during the month. The attendance has averaged 138 boys and 127 girls. This is a lower average than usual and is accounted for by the prevalence of colds in the second week of the month. t "The district nurse, Sister MacDonald, carried out her routine inspection of the children during the month and found the general health of the pupils to be good. The dental nurse, Miss M. Gardner, has been absent throughout the month on account of illne^s, bui Is expected to b'e well enough to return to duty in the near future. In reply to a letter, the Health Department stated that owing to the shortage of nurses it was impossible to supply a relieving nurse during Miss Gardner's absence. The school caretaker, Mr.
- - »■ i" vwt j i w nii . E. Chester, was absent for some days on account of illness. During the month a visit was made to the school by Mr. Barnett, instructor in agriculture. The annual corrie jDined choirs' festival wa^ held ih Foxton and Shannon and proved to be successful both educationally and financially.r • j1 "The October meeting ofr the Parents' and Teachers' Association was very well attended. The secretary of the Automobile Association (Wellington), Mr. Sutherland, together with Messrs. Silverwood and Keenan (patrol officers) , was present aiid addressed the meeting, Road safety and other educational films were shown. The next meeting of the association will be held on Monday, November 8, l when questiens will be answered by the teaching staff . This year's calf judging promises to be very successful, with almost 50 calves and a large number of lambs beifig entered in the various classes.
