Strong Demand For Flowers And Vegetables
Messrs TownSend and Paul, Ltd., fruit and produce mercnants, Wellington ,report that during the past week increased supplies of hot-house tomatoes have been coming to hand and meeting with a ready demand. Returns in most cases have • proved very satisfactory. After being g utted for some days, the grapefruit market has become firm. Tree tomatoes :and passion fruit are in keen enquiry, and consignments are rec:ommended. ' Hothouse beans, green peas and broad bean's are arriving in increased quantities, !and values are accordingly eas.er Generally speaking all vegetables are wanted. Heavy* yardings of poi^ltry have been offered, and j values are most attractive. In the i flower section values have impro/ved greatly, and early consignments are recomme*nded. Quotations are as follows: — Vegetables: Asparagus ls 4d to Is 7d; broad beans, 4d to 8d; hothouse beans, 2s 9d to 3s lb; Beetroot, spring, 25s to 32s 6d; old 20s to 22s; lettuce, best, 8s to 13s; others, 2s 6d to 7s; leeks, 18s to 27s; rhubarb, 9s to 14s; silver beet, : 3s to 6s; spinach, 5s to 14s all : cases; spring cabbage, carrots pumpkins (triumble), parsnips, swedes, all ceiling price; cauliflowers, best, 18s to 20s; others, 11s to 14s sacks; peas, 6d to 9d per lb.; kumeras, choice, ceiling price; others, 3s to 13s per bag; cucumbers, ls 3d to 2s each; parsnips, 20s to 27s case; mint, 3d to 9d; parsley, 3d to 9d; spring onions, 3s to 4s; radishes, 2d to all bunches; new potatoes, Pukekohe,, ceiling price; others, 2d to 3d per lb. Fruit: Hothouse tomatoes, 2s 4d to 2s 10 per lb; tree tomatoes, 25s 6d to 36§ per box; grapefruit, 8s to 14s per bushel; mpyer lemons and sweet oranges, ceiling price, passions, 4s to 5s per dozen. Flowers: Poppies, tangerine, ls to l's 9d; art, 2s to 5s per gross; jtulips, ls 6d to 2s 3d; carnations, 1 2s to 4s; iris, ls to 2s 6d; sweet jwilliam, ls 6d; stock, 3'cl to lOd; ixias, 3d to lOd per bunch. Poultry: White Leghorn hens, | best, 5s 6d to 7s; others, 3s 6d to 4s 6d; Black Orpington hens, best, 10s to 12s; others, 7s to 9s; White Leghorn roosters, 3s 6d to 4s 6d; Black Orpington roosters, 5s 6d to 7s 6d; young cockerels, 2s to 2s 3d per lb.; white ducks, young, 15s to 1 19s; old, 8s to 10s; coloured, 12s to 1 15s; old, 5s 6d to 7s 6d; turkeys, 2s 2d to 2s 3d per lb. live weight.
