CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 5. Seeond prize of £10,000 in Tattersall's Xo. .1 Melbourne Cup consultation, has been won by Dr. William Julius Diekel, of Rotherham, Xorth Cantei'bury. l)r. Dickel, who is a married man with a married daughter, is the only medical practitioner at Rotherham. Dr. Dickel, when interviewed by telephone, read out the number of his ticket, Xo. 145412, whieh tallied with the number in a Press Association message from Auckland. He said that he had bought the ticket using the nom de plume "D.J.W. care of W.J.D., Rotherham, North Canterbury. " Dr. Dickel said he believed that the horse he had drawn, Dark Alarne, nearly won the race from Rimfire, but he was not worrying about that. "It was the rnost amazing luck/' he said. "This is the first Melbourne Cup ticket I have ever taken." Dr. Dickel said he had made no plans about how to spend the money. He was just going "to carry on with his practice as he liked his work. Dr. Dickel was born in Melbourne but studied medicine at Otago University where he graduated in 1924. He has been at Rotherham eight or nine years.
