School Of Athletics To Be Held At Napier

During the New Year. period the HaWke's Bay-Pdverty! Bay qentre of the New Zealand Amateur Ath-^ ' letic Association will conduct ,a three weeks' summer school of athletics at Napier. The school will consist of three : weekly courses, each covering different categories of events. The- first course, which will be from Monday, December 27 to. Sat- t urday, Ja&uary 1, will cover ' sprints up to the quarter mile, the tpree hurdle' events," and the high, long and hop, step and'jump. The school will be controlled by the Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay centre coach, Frank Sharpley, whp holds a diploma from the Loughibdrough College and is a New Zealand representative and present eo-holder - of the sprint hurdles record. In this he will be assisted as tutors by several outstanding athletes. Peter Mullins, the Australian decathon champion ahd place getter in the 1948 Olympiad; John Holland, 440 yards hurdles champion and record holder; Arthur Eustace, present 100 yards flat and 120 and 220 yds title holder; Gladys Symes, ex-N.Z. champion bf 75, 100 -and 220 yards. ■ Also any athletes with National Titles to itheir credit whom the centre seems fit to invite* The §chqol will . b.e held at McLean Park, Napier, probably the fastest track in New Zealand at the present time and fully equipoed with gymnasium, lecture rqpm and film room. A complete series of instructional films have been obtained by the centre from the U-.S.A, ahd other instructional films will be shown and discussed. It is hoped that films of the 1948 Glympics will be shown and commented on by those who saw the Games. A photographic unit will take action snaps each day and the styles shown in the shots will be discussed on the day following. During the school, several athletic meetings will be held in Napier and the surrounding to.wns, highlighting the particular events : discussed at the.week's course... , . For the begifiner, the competlng athlete' and' " the club coach, they aim at explaining the working theory behind each event, a knowledge of which is a sound basis for championship performance.
