News Briefs From Borough Council Meeting
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday ' evenihg, when Cr.: B. Clayton • (DeputyMayor) presided over • Chs. V. J Bateman, H. L. Norri^ R. - S Dowhes, C. M; Cronquest, L.'-G. Sayer, c. G. Wishart and H. Aitchison. until the • arrival of the Mayor later in the evening aftei* his return from a business trip. The town clel'k (Mr. J. T. Bovis) a'dvised that letters of appreciation had been sent put to all the voluntary workers who had so kindly assisted with the work of reconstructing the library. A letter of thanks for the. council's expressibn of sympathy was received from Mrs. R. Hayes and family. The borough foreman's report was rea'd and received. The town clerk stated that the borough foreman would be commencing his holidays as from Friday next and arrangements were then made to carry out the routine work in his absence. . Cr. Downes reporte'd that' hemlock was growing in the section next to the Council Chambers. The borough foreman was instructed to attend to this matter. The Shannon Plunket Society made application for the use of the domain for a garden party on December 4. • It was stated that arrangements had been made so that the function would not interfere with sports club activty. The application was granted. The secretary of the Shannon Athletic Club made application for permission to dig a jumping pit at the domain. This matter was left in the hands of the domain committee to attend to'.
Regarding insurance cover for voluntary labour as working bees at the cemetery and domain, it Was agreed to take out a policy for any work authorised by the council. Cr. Cronquest stated that a separate' policy would be needed for each :job. He had asked a builder for an estimate. for the/ work. •- ■ The ! domain- copper and' chimney required certain repairs. Two applcations for the .erection of she'ds were in order and on his motion were approved. 'Cr. Sayer, ' chairman of ■. the 'wbrks' ' 'committee," stated that arrangemeiits for : the ihSpection of the' borough water supply - ^by •hn engineer had- ^ bCen made.- •' ■ 4juestions regarding noxious weeds on uhformed streets'' within the borough were cleared up. ' Cr. Clayton, chairman of ^he domain and cemetery committee, stated that the grass on the domain had been cut and would be ready for sporting fixtures to be played there on Saturday. Rubbish containers had been placed at more convenient points at. the cemetery; and 'drums had been placed under the water iaps so that there would be an adequate supply of water when required. Accounts amounting to £88 2s 8d were passed for payment and this concluded the routine business of the meeting.
