New Rector Hears News On Stage
Received Thursday, 7 p.m. LONDON, Nov. 4. Just before the curtain went up for the iirst uiglit revival of James Bridie's play The Anatomist, at Westminster Theatre, Lornlon, the actor, Alastair Sim, who takes the lead, was told that he had been elected rector of Edinburgh University. Among the last lines spoken in the play by >Sini , are the words; "I am obliged to you, gentlemen, " as, in the role of I)r. Ivnox, he thanks the students of Edinbnrgli for rescuing hira from a mob. The Westminster Theatfe audibnee whieli had heard the news of Mr. Sini 's election, cheered the allusion arai cheered again when tliy author, Mr. Bridie, began his speech at the fall of the curtain; ' ' My Lord Rector, ladies and gentlenien. " Mr. Sim, who was a student at Edinburgh ITiiversiiy and later lecturer in phonetics, received 207S votes, defeating the only other candidate, Mr. Ilarold MacMillan, M.P., by 1276. Mr. Sini succeeds the Admiral of the Fleet, Yiscount Cunningham. Some of his predecessors in the post of rector, have been Gladstone, Thoraas Carlyle, Beattv, Llovd (ieorge and Churchill.
