Lost Sense Of Their Moral Obligations
Received Wednesday, 7 p.m. LONDON, Nov. 3. . The Archhishop of York, Dr. Garbett, in his presidential address to the York diocesan conference, discussed "the startling rise in the numher of crimes" and "largely lost sense of moral obligations in the present generation." Dr. Garhett said that quite apart from offences against the law, there was general agreement that lying was no longer treated as a serious f ault and that. it was used. without uesitation as the means either to escape from some distasteful duty or in an- attempt to hide spme fault. The divorce courts shpwed adultery was so common as hardly to be regarded as blameworthy if many of its members refused to respect the goods of their neighbonrs or failed to speak the truth. "The figures and the opinions of magistrates, schoolmasters and welfare workers, show- that as .a nation we are now on a dangerous and slippery slope." Dr. Garbett called the church to eampaign against lawhreaking. He said the church could he an immense power in the conver§ion of 'England in an age in which the old civilisation was dying and the new one had not yet come to hirth.
