AUCKLAND, Nov. 1. Teehuieal research with tlie aid of radio activit.v, is entering a new chapter iu the Dominion with the completion for the New Zealand Fertiliser Manufacturers ' Research Association of the first beta-rav eounter to be manufactured in the country. Its interior.an intricate mass of radio-type valves and wiring, the eounter will be used to track the eourse of elements sueh as phosphorous in unseen processes of earth and plant life. Mr. B. T. Crookes, ehairman of the Fertiliser Manufacturers' Research As- 1 soeiation. said that New Zealand 's| t'arm lands retpiired regular appliea- j tions of large amounts of fertiliser and research carried out with the new instrument into the use and application of this fertiliser, woiild enable it to be put to the best possible use. These investigations would takc some time and l)r. M. M. Bmns, leeturer in soils anrl fertilisers at Canterburv Agricultural Coliege, would take up the position of direetor of the association early next year. Negotiations were proceeding for a site for the laboratory and exqterimental plots near Auckland. T"ntil these premises Avere ready the eounter was being used at the Soil Bureau, Wellington.
