These attacks are still concentrated north-east of the city and the main forces of both sides are engaged. Unofficial reports said that the Communists had already broken. into the city ahd that the last Governmeht offieials fi'ed this afternoon, leaving the city in anarchic confusion. A despatch by the New York Times correspondent in Nanking says that the "loss of all Manchuria became a recognised fact'late yesterday as Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek returned unexpectedly from North China. The United Press quotes a high Government official in Nanking as saying that Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek told the top Governmeht leaders that the fate of his regime would be decided "in the next three liionths." He is reported to have summoned the Premier, Dr. Wong, Defence Minister, General Ho Yen-chin, and former Premier, General Chang Chun, to an emergency meeting at which he made a statemeht.
