Many Visit Races Local followers of the sport of kings journeyed to Bulls on Saturday for the Rangitikei Racing Club's meeting. The bright, sunny day attracted many who would not have otherwise made the trip, The bus which left Shannon was "filled to eapacity, and many private cars headed in the direction of Bulls. All reported a most enjoyable day. Speedway Fans Eager Followers of the thrilling Sport of speedway racing are eagerly looking forward to the opening of the 1948-49 season. Reports so far to hand from Palmerston North seem very attractive. It is unfortunate, however, that the meetings are to be held on Saturday evenings, as many country followers are unable to be present, Monday evenings toeing favoured by local followers* Danger of Fireworks With Guy Fawke's Day approaching, parents are reminded of the many dangers which can be caused by fireworks. The superintendent of the Shannon Volunteer Fire Brigade appeals to all parents to supervise any -fires lwhich children may have,' and to see that they are lit in open areas and not near buildings, fences or hedges. One accident has already occurred where medical aid was necessary to treat burns caused by careless handling of fireworks. The Old And The New Ideal weather conditions prevailed over the weekend for the commencement of summer sport and the closing of the golf season. The Shannon Bowling and Croquet Club and the Shannon Cricket Club opened their seasons on Saturday, while several golfers attended the closing of the Mangaore and Levin Clubs. The Buckley Golf Club closed its season ,yesterday. There was a good pttendance of visitors and members at all functions. Foxton Queen Crowned There was a good attendance at the Foxton Town Hall last week for the final act in , the Foxton Silver : Band Queen Carnival, the coronation ceremony, in * which the Sports represehtative' (Miss Margaret. Haycock), was crowned Queen of Foxton. Unfortunat'ely the weather was most unfavourable and must have had a big effect on the attendance. The ceremony was carried through with precision- and without a hitch, bringing the carnival to a very happy and .colourful close.
