Item's of interest to farmers in this district, which were discussed at the meeting of the Maimwatu Catchment Board held on Tueday, were" as- follows: — Discussing the 'staif positiOn, the chairman said that drainage boards were getting a fair proportion . of the board's engineers' services free of cost, There was a limit on how far this could go, he said-. The clerk, Mr. L. G. Hagan, informed members that he had received no communication from "the Public.Works Department 'regarding the recently-announced Government grant of £46,000 for land reclamation work, and he did not know whether the Manawatu district was to get an allocation of the mohey. It was decided to request the department for more information. Item's from the report of the chief engineer, Mr. P. G. Evans, regardi-ng.. the Lower Manawatu scheme stated that considerable caleulations had been made on the probable flood levels between the sea and the Oroua River'when the ma j or scheme is carried out. Observations had been carried out of high tide levels at spring tides with westerly winds for the purpose of arriving at the effect of the tide on flood levels in the lower area. The Tokomaru scheme
had been investigated and -an estimate was being ;prepared for work in this area. The boards nursery had been replanted "With 3000 macrocarpa yearlings. and 12,000 poplars in special varieties from the State Forest Department, Rotorua. All plants were _ mabing splendid growth. It was mtendea to sgw macrocarpa seed for a further supply of plants, and advice on this has heen received from the State Forest Department.
