Brothers' Unluoky Weekend Two Auckland brothers are in hospital gt Whangarei as a result of motor cycle ' accidents at. the weekend. Mr. Noel Foster, aged 19, of Mount Eden Road, suffered a broken shoulder blade When he fell from his . machine on the State highway' $ short distance south of Whangarei in. .Saturday. His brother, Mr. Larry Foster, §ged 21, was admitted to hospital on Sunday morning with injuries suffered when his motor cycle struck a dog. Caustic In Holy Water Some person with a diabolical sense of mischief added caustic soda • to - the holy water in the stpups at the do'or of St. Mary of t'he Angels' Church, Boulcott Street, Wellington, on Sunday, October 3. Several worshippers were nastily burnt on the foreh^ad as they blessed themselves. Luckny, no one got a drop in the eye, which would have meant blindness. The caustic soda was put in t'he water about 3.30 p.m. The police are inquiring and would welcome any infdrmation. Bitten By Alsatian Dog Injuries necessitating medical attention were sustained by Mr. J. Tillyard, a railway employee of Dannevirke, when he had a hand bitten by an Alsatian dog. Mr. Tillyard was preparing to consign an Alsation dog from the Dannevirke railway station when it slipped its collar and ran down Station Street. Mr. Tillyard pursued and caught the dog and while fitting toe collar, another Alsatian appe&red and attacked him. H;is , injuries are not serious. Unusual Theft Unusual circumstances were asscciated with the disappearance of a sum of money, variously estimated at between £100 and £150, from a cash box in ari upstairs room occupied by John Nicoletaos at 499 Main Street, Palmerston North, between 8 p.m. and 11.15 p.m. on Sunday. The intruder left quite a substantial sum of money in notes and silver in the box which with its fuil contents could have been removed entirely without inconvenience. Nothing else in the room had ben disturbed. It is be' lieved that entry was gained through an unlocked window on the ground floor. Regeneration of Island To make sure that no goats remained on Goat Island, in the Three Kings Gi'oup, a party of scientists visited t'he island last week. They were surprised by the remarkable regeneration of flora since 1946, when goats on the island were exterminated by the Department of Internal Affaivs. Future recovery of the island' will provide valuable data which can be applied to mainland problems of the maintenance of vegetation and the preventioh of soil erosion, says t'he asaistant director of Auckland Museum, Mr. A. W. B. Powell, in a report on - the viSit. Other memberg of the party were Messrs. G. A. Buddle, E. G, Turbott and H. Batty, of the museum staff, and Mr, Logan Eell, of the wild Jife branch of the Department of Internal Affairs.
