DUNEDIN, Oct. 11. Bupjiort for conqiulsory military traiuiug iu New Zealand was given at the couvention of tlie New Zealand Junior Chaiuber of t'oinmercc. The subject was discusseil in committee and a stalement issued later read: — "Allhough it is apparent that the question of compulsorv training is controversial and political, and subjects of this liature are noriuallv outside the scope of junior ehamber activity, delegates considered that the dnfence problem is of such gravity as to be aliove national politics. , The' conveiit ioii, repi'esenting young men ' eligilile for service aiul fully conseious of all tlie implications, thinks it has aii obligation to make its ppsitiou. clear. It'has decided to make representations to the Goyernment for -^a'Mjstein of compulsory military traMatig to be ins^i|uted at the earliest possible date." It was decided to apply for the 1950 Junior Chaiuber Intemational Oongress to be held - in New Zealand. The applieation will be heard at the congress at Brussels next year. It was decided to allot tiie 1949 eon- ■ ventjou to" the Palmerston 'North (•hamber. The Palmerston North Chamber won the Bardsley Bell awarded to the Chamber sending tlie largest delegation in proportion to its size and the distance travelled.
