Directed To Make Power Economies
WELLINGTON, Oct. 11. The Power Supply Authorities inthe North Island are directed by the State Hydro-Electric Department this week to seek the immediate cooperation of the public in power economies with the objeet of avoiding arbitrary cuts next Avinter. The Electricity Ooiitrollcr, Mr. A. E. Bavenport, in a message to the North Island Supply Authorities today, said that tlie hydraulic position had shown some improvemcnt during the last week but the consumptiou was still high and was 7.0(5 per cenl. aliove the allocation for the week. From now on, said Mr. Davenport, uutil the end of the year, allocations would approximate consumptiou during the corresponding period of 1947. This was necessary in order . that a greater quantity of power could be made available during the eold winter months when it was most lieeded. By. now representatives of the power supply authorities who attended the reeent conference at Dunedin, would liave returiied and it was expected that they would put into effect the nieasures endorsed by the conference. The chief of these Was the enlistntent" of", consumers' cooperation in order that the objectionable practice of imposing arbitrary powers cuts might thereby he avoided. -It was agreed, contiuued Mr. Davenport, that a '• united elfort in this dir-eCtion should be m&de.by all the authorities iri tlie interests of the eonsumers. If the bute ome }f 'sucli a Campaign was siiccessful, then it should be possible to keep power available at all times and enable the work o.f the eountrv to proceed in the liomes, on the farms, and in ihdustry with a minimum upset to all.
