Record Tow Is Nearing The End
~ — ~ AUCKLANL, Oct. 10. With. tlie disabied'freighter Fernmoor in tow; the P. and O. Line iuotor ship Palana, was 450 miles east of Auckland to-night. The inaster of the Palana, .Captain ypurr, said in a yadio inessage that she had been forced to eaae dovvn her speed on Saturday night because of adverse weather. At 6 o'clock this tnorning the Pernmoor's cable jumped the windlas's and the vessels were hove to unti) the cable was secured. Th'ecourse was resumed at 8 a.m. The report received to night stated that the ships were maxing four knots in a fresh gusty westsouthwest wind and a heavy swell. The two ships have now been together for 18 days and have covered aoout 1750 miles of the record 2200 miles tow to Aucklaud. The progress of the ships has apparently been'severely cherked b y the weather. The run in 24 lionrs up to noon yesterday was bfi miles compared with 120 miles in Ihe previous 24 liours. The two siiips are now expected to reaeli Auckland Thursday.
