WELCOME GUEST TRIUMPHS IN GREAT CUP RACE Otaki Owned Castlebrae Successful
A first-class field paraded for the Masterton Cup and a grand race resulted. Half a mile from home Peter Theio was setting the ' pace ahead of Iron Duke, Welcome Guest, Furioso, Liebestraum. Riverview, Ballinagh and Batley ^n:d Batley then made a fast move foryvard into third place. The field bunched as they ran to the home tupn and halfway down the running Welcome Guest and Liebestraum moved past the leaders and they were followed by Lord Holland and The Stormovik. Welcome Guest had charge half a furlong from the line and Liebestraum then ma'de a great bid for victory, Welcome Guest hung on under pressure to win by a head. There was another splendid tussle for the niinor places and . The Stormovik just got up for third ahead of Lord Holland. They were a- length and a quarter from Liebestraum. Lord Holland was fourth and Riverview, Ballinagh and Renowned were in line next. The day was mainly fine but there were heavy showers just hefore- noon. The course was in great order and the going was easy. There was a large attendance and the totalisator handled £50,461, coinpared with £47,774} last year' the increase being £26S6}. The Solway Handicap was run in divisions wbioli were won by Castlebrae and Da Vinci. Morocco was the pacemaker in the first and Castlebrae, Royal Shar, Voltaic, Mangatiti and Garry were in close attendance into the straight where Castlebrae finished smoothly to win by over a length from Morocco, a nose in front of Voltaic. Next in order were Mangatiti, Miss Bairnsfather and Fleetwood. Trafalgar Day, Battle Survey and Sir Royal were on terms ahead of Da Vinci as the second division ran to the straight and Da Vinci soou movt-d up to challcnge Trafalgar Day. They were travelling very fast and Da Vinci had to bejept under a hard ride to win by a length. Denionic finished well for third four lengths away and next were Battle Survey and Pitoitoi. Sky Bomb and Lady's Man sliared the icad for most of the way and Incision, Minc Host, Kelmont, Keen Wit ahd Lord Latour were all in the picture when the field turned for home. Golden Spa was fourth and Marloch finished solidly for fifth ahead of Gold Spi and Abbotsford. Finola piloted the second division to the straight followed by His Lordship, Talent, Fyxen and Spoil Sport. Finola was never in danger and she won by over two lengths from His Lordship, two lengths in front of Fleetness. Talent was fourth and Fyxen, Spoil Sport and Rising Tide were next.
