Minister's Invitation To Coal Miners

Press Association)

(Per

GREYMOUTH, Oct. 11. An invitation to the Blackball and Roa State Miners' Unions to confer with him on the setting up of a joint management committee was extended by the Minister of Mines, * Mr. McLagan, when he visited Blackball on Saturday. Mr. McLagan said that with the nationalisation of mines, the Government believed that the unions, which could contribute many useful ideas for better working, should be given the full opportunity to do so. He hoped the invitation would be accepted so that even better production results could be achieved in future. The State owned all the important coal mines today with the exception of four, but these would be taken over soon with the passing of the recent Bill by Parliament, vesting control in the State of all coal measures, and, with the State operating all mines, he felt that the highest degree of efficiency would be reached.
