Provision For Workers At Tourist Resorts

WELLINGTON, Oct. 8. Continuing the debate on the Tourist and Health Resorts vote, Messrs J. R. Hanan (Nat., Invercargill) and W. T. Anderton (Lalu, Eden) and other speakers urged tlie provision of facilities at leading tourist resorts for those wlio eould not alford to pay relatively high hotel tariffs. Air. Hanan said that at Milford Kound there were many Public Works huts which, at little ex pense, eould be made suitable foi workers and others on low incomes who wanted chreTTp holidavs. Mr. Anderton said that many workers, especially from Auckland, eould eujojr cheap exeursions to the Chateau if facilities were available. The Tourist Department *s lirst duty was to provide for New Zealand workers, not for Ameriean millionaires. Mr. R. M. Algie (Nat., Remuera) urged the provision of liquor licences at the Chateau and Waitomo Coves, even if legislation were required. He knew of no obstac.Ie save an apocryphal mythical thing called the Treaty of Waitangi. It was just drivel to let. this prevent tlie provision for orderly consumption of alcohol which was much better than the disorderly swilling of alcohol at tourists' resorts,.
