WELLINGTON, Oct. 5. An increase of 3d an hour, 10s on a 40-hour week, for timber workers, was elaimed by the New Zealand Timber Workers' Union in Conciliation Council today. The union asked for wage rates vaiying for ditferent classilications of workeTS, from 3s 8Jd to Is 2d Iiourly. Mr. F. Craig, national secretary of the union, in support of the claims, quoted figures of timber production. He said the industry had increased its output by 70,000,000 board feet for the year ended March 31 last. Mr. Arthur Seed, secretary of the Timber Industry Employers' Union, in reply, said the increased output was due to a gre'ater number of units and men in production and not to any increase in man-hour output. The employers proposed that the wage rates as provided under the present award should continne. The Council spent most of the day in a discussion of clauses governing conditions and an adjournment ' was taken until "tomorrow, ? I "
