Watersiders Reply To Federation
WELLINGTON, Oct. 4., Repudiation of the circular issued last wcek by the New Zealand Federation of Labour describing the anticonscription resolution passed by the New Zealand Waterside Workers' Union executive as unconstitutional and a defiance of the federation national council was made today by the president of the union (Mr. II. Barnes) and the secretary (Mr. T. Hill). By asking its branches to aet. througli district trades councjis, which were ail'iliations ofjdie Federation, with the object of calling a special conference of the Federation, the conduct of the union was strictly constitutional, today 's statement claimed and added that the Federation had no difficulty in calling extraordinary conferences when it saw fit. "In February last year a special conference was called in an attempt to strangle the Waterside Workers' Cnion. There was putsch against union leadership. Because of the inherent fairness of the average New Zealand industrial worker the attack failed. With this precedent in mimi, the union says that it is the duty of thbse responsible to call togetlier the industrial parliament of New Zealand on the peacetime conseription issue. We will urge this "through the district trades counejjs."
