• AUCKLAND, Oct. 3.v "The tejiiperance committee of the Presbyterian Church is very mueh concer'ned at tlie failure of promised liceiising legislation to ap.pear and at reports in the press that tlie main recommcndations ofthe Licensing Comuiission are not to have a jilace in it," states the Kt. Rev. J. D. Sniitli, convener of the committee, in a letter to the Prime Ministcr, M r. Fraser. "We thoroughly disapprovc of the atmo8]>here of secrecy which surrounds the situation," states Rev. Smith, "and regard what is happening as -a \lenial of democ.ratic rights of the iieople. They should be adequately informed of the proposals of the Government and given adequate opportunity to consider and express themselves regarding thera." The Rev. Smith said the evidence before the • Commission showed that salutory reforms of the licensing situation were necessary. While his committee did not approve, of all its recommendations, they were deeply concerned that some real reforin should be intrQduced which would increase the sobriety of the nation.
