Police Raid Golf Clubs For Liquor

Oct. 2.\ Ralds ontho ciubkbuses- of the Auckland Golf Club at Middlemore and. the Grange Golf Club at Papatoetoe were, ■ rnade yesterday afternoon. by a party of poiice.men and stocks of liquor at both places were seized. All the liquor was taken in one truck. ; , : The raids were the first of their kind in the histories of tlie clubs. At Mid-. dlemore the fmal of the women 's club championship was being played when the police made their visit. The. course at Papatoetoe was practically. deserted. A police- party of four visited the Middlemore course first. When they arrived the secretary of the club..i(Mr, R. L. McNivenj was ' on the course' watcliing the final of the • women 's championship. There wero about ; 50 persons on the course at the time. Mr. McNiven returned to the clubhouse where he was advised'that the, police party had a search warrant, and was iooking for liquor. He was. asked where it was kept, and, on being told; the police carried it to a waitiug truck. With the' truck well laden with the proceeds of the raid at the Middlemore course the police party next visited the Grange clubhouse. . According lo a club official the secretary (Mr. H. Luke) was informed of ihe position and the liquor stocks were seized. ..The stocks were very low, being the balance of last weekend's supplies. Police visits were made ' to two golf clubs in the Waikato last Saturday. After taking an invfehtory of the liquor stocks the police too'lc no further action.
