All-day Tourney Concludes Basketball Season

As a Wind-up to the seaSon's activities the Horowhenua Basketbail Association eonducfced an all-day 'ioUrriament on Saturday for A, B and C grade teams. Tweniy-four teams were entered and competition was some of the keenest seen during the season. Play' began at 10 a.m. , and continued throughout the day until 4 p.m., with a short adjournment for luncheon. ■The competition was designed so that each team played the other ' teams in the appropriate grade. In the A grade, eight teams were entered but three "of theSe, Aces . A, St. Joseph's and College C, withdrew and consequentiy in the results given below, these teams lost all games by default. in the B grade, nine teams were entered and again three withdrew, these being Aces B, Tui B and K.B.H. SeVen teams were entered in the C grade and one, College H, withdrew. This tournament is the first one of its kind to be held by the asso-^ ciation. Also making its appear/7 ance for the .first time was a shield, ^ competed for among the B and C grades, for the team which scored" che most goals during the tourna-. ment. It was presented by Mr. H. • F. Birley, of Levin, and was won by Convent (C grade), who secured 41 goals in five games. The object of this trophy is to encourage accurate goal shooting. Next year, the shield will be competed for over the whole season, while there will also be a trophy for the player who scores most goals. A record of each goal will be kept and an honours list comoiled.

The winners of the A grade were decided only after a play-off. Wanderers, College A and Tui A all scored twelve points and in the resulting draw and play-off, Wanderers beat College A 6 — 3 and Tui A bpat Wanderers 6 — 3. Tui A, therefore, took the honours. The B grade was won Oiitright by Kotahitanga with 14 ooints, Punahau, one point behind, were runners-up. The C grade was won by Primary A with 13 points, ConVent running a close second with 11. Unfortunately, owing to unforeseen circumstances, detailed results of the C grade competition are not obtainable.
