Otaki River Protection Association Meets
The newly-formea Otaki. River Protection Association met recently , when matters in connection with the river generaily were discussed. It was agreed to conflrm the views expounded when the conference of engineers met at Otaki on the occasion of the recent inspection, and a protest is to be forwarded to the Soil Conservation Council against the unrestricted cutting of further timber in the upper reaches of the Waitawaewae, which flows into the Otaki stressing that Govemment supervision should be enforced in this and other areas with the object oi preventing unneeessary ponution of the Otaki River. It was considered that these steps, if put intc action, wou.d greatly assist the chec'king of erosion in the upper reaches, and be the means of preventing damage to work undertaken by the dragline an'd other Public Works Department equipment. It was further agreed that following on the statements issued by the Manawatu Catchmeni Board's" engineer, Mr. P. Evans. that the board be invited to revisit Otaki and ' explain its scheme to the parties most intereste'd, the public of Otaki and district, and especially those residing on the banks of the river.
