AUCKLAND, Sept. 30. Franklin produce growers have begun digging a new season's potato crop that promises to he a record. Since the first 1000 bags were lifted on Monday, yields of 4i and 5 tons to the acre have been common. Merchants with 20 and 30 years' experience of the Pukekohe district ' consider there has been no harvest to J equal the return that is expected this year from the 800 acres under eulti- . vation. ! "The crops are in perfect condition as the result of the roild winter and ' past four weeks of sunshine," said J Mr. L. W. Key, secretary of the Franklin Produce Growers' Association. ' ' The yields now being obtained are remarkable for the last week in * September. The crop at the same t time in the two preceding seasons t amounted to only about 30 cwt. to the acre. ' ' 1 One of the largest potato produc- c ing districts in the Dominion, Puke i kohe supplies a market that extends fchroughout the North Island. The r digging of the main Pukekohe crop continues until Pecember. The area ^ Ln potatoes is approximately the same c as last year. a \
