• WTLLINGTON, Sept. 10. The Labour member for Northern Maori (Mr. T. P. Paikea) had some .pointed comments to make on the quality of Maori footballers in .the Budget debate in the House of Representatives this morning when he refer'.red to the Press controversy over the exclusion of Maoris from the team for•South Africa. ■ ': * Mr. Paikea said one player affected "was the Welilrigton half-back, Bevan." He was not eligible for the Maoii team which toured Fiji recently bpcause he had too little Maori blood, and now" he would be penalised by being ineligible for selection for South Africa through having some Maori blood. If it were deeided to send a New Zealand team to South Africa it should be called a European team, not an All Black team, beeause he could guarantee that North Auckland had the best eentre-three-quarter in New Zealand in the person of J. J3. Smith. Members: Hear, hear. Mr. Paikea made it clear that he was not criticising the policy of the Rugby Union, but suggested to Maori plkyers that they would be welcomed into the League code.
