Co-operation Between Maori And Pakeha

WELLINGTON, Sept. 9. The habit of thinking of Maoris and Europeans as opposites, was deplored by Mr. Fraser wlicn speaking in the House of Representatives today on the r'eport of the Maori Alfairs Committee on a peti.tion which had been presented to the House conceming Maori interests in Taranaki. The Prime Minister said unfortunately outside influences had cut across tlie ideal oi' hannonious cooperation between the races but he did not want to deal with tliat. " We are aiming at New Zealanders of. bo.th raees,." said Mr. Fraser. That was the ideal of the leaders of young Maori people today. He referred to the statement of Mr. E. B. Corbett (Egmont) that as the' Maoris were on the sanie basis as pakehas in obtaining social. seeu'ritv, they should provide their own money to cover the expenses of football teanis and other sports organisations instead of calling on the funds of trust boards. "I can quite understaiid that a Rugliy tnatch bulks large in the life of the Maori people and it niight be a good social act at tinies to liring the people together for that purpose," said Mr. Fraser.
