AUCKLAND, Sept. G. A total of 27 charges of forgery aiu! theft from the Public Works Depart nient, involving an amount of £993, was preferred against three men when they appeared before Justices of the Peaee today. The accused are Cteorge Malcolui Smith, aged 35, elerk; Mate Delich, aged 58, contractor; and .Tair.es Fullerton Brown, aged 53, insurance' agent. The hearing is expected to talce two or three days and there are 54 witness es. Smith was eharged with the attempl ed theft of £44 and the theft of £315. He also faced 14 charges of forguig Public Works Department wages sheets with the intention that thev should be acted on as genuine. Smith and Brown wcre eharged with stealing £207, the property of tlm Public Works Department, between April 17 and June 2, 1948. Smith and Delich were eharged with stealing £471 and also faced nine charges of forgery in that thev mad" out Public Works Department dailv cartage shcets with the intention that these docuntent.s should be acted on as renuine. The charges related to work done or tlleged to have bee.ii done on Public Works Department jobs at Whenuapai, Te Atatu, Hobsonville and the Titirang scenic reserve between December 3 1947 and June 11, 1948.
