NEW PLYMOUTH, Sept. 5. A West Coast teain drawn from Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawata and King Country defeated an Auckland metropolitan team in an interprovineial golf matok at New Rlymouth. yesterday . and today by 15 matohes to 9, witfi . three all square. The course was strange to many of the Auckland teain who found their greatest difhculty lay in gauging the strength of the greens that differecl substantiaily t'rom those in Auckland. The foursomes were playecf yesterday and the singles today, when principal mterest centred in the meeting of the New Zealand open champion, R. H. Glading, and the amateur champion, B. M. Silk. It was their third clash this season and honours to date were even. Glading made 110 mistake about his victory today. He was two up after the lirst 1S lioles, having played sound rather than brilliant golf. Silk lacked some of his usual accuraCy in his approaches to the greens/ Glading gave nothing away in the first 9 holes of the afternoon round which he did in 31 to be 5-up. His quality was shown in his abiiity to recover f 10111 his few mistakes. Silk found the bunkers with approaches at the 4th and 7th and at the 7th exploded from one bunker into anothei. Silk won holes back at the 11th when Glading was in the rough to the right of the green, and at the 13th with a magnificent approach close to the pin into a stiff breeze. Three putts 011 the 15tfy, however, eost Silk the match. Better golf than tho two champions played, was produced by the secoud striugs, J. Jeffery (West Coast) and G. E. Kevell (Auckland). Revell was 110 match for Jeffery though Kevell played good golf. Kevell had three 2's in his moruing round but came in at lunch 1down to Jeffery whose putting had been uncanny. Kevell'g main problem was 111 gauging the greens. He continued to play good golf in the afternoon and covered tlie first 9 holes in 35, oue under scratch score, but he could not keep pace with Jeffery 's putting and the match ended at the 14th. The day's best round was that of T. Jeffery, third man in the West Coast team, who .carded 69 in the morning after putting his second out of bounds at the 8th. E. W. Young, his opponent, recorded scratch figures of 73 but was 4-down. Jeffery kept the pressure 011 and won by the biggest margin of the day. His card for 29 holes was 8 under the scratch score. J. Holden, winuer of the Kotorua Club's tournament last week, continued to show good forni. He had scratch figures for the morning round which he linished 1-up on xV. N. Young, and did 71 in the afternoon. Kesuits, Auckland players mentioned first: — Foursomes: K. H. Glading and G. E. Revell lost to B. M. Silk and J. Jeffery 5 and 4, E. W. Young and P.
