Broken Bottle Menace The menace presented by irresponsible persons carelessly discarding empty beer bottles was again demonstrated at Foxton Beach this week. Colleen, six-year-old daughter of iVXr. and Mrs. K. Rodgers, of Park Street, was playing with other children on the sand hills near the boating club pavilion and jumped on to the bottom portion of a broken bottle inflicting a severe gash in- the foot. After receiving medical attention lccally she was admitted to the Palmerston North Hospital. Infant Boy Drowned A distressing tragedy occurred at Makuri, Pahiatua, yesterday niorning when the 18-months-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Len Cooper was drowned in the Makuri River. The child was missed by his mother at about 10.30 a.m., and a search was instituted, the body being discovered in the river about threequarers of an hour later. The Cooper home is sit'uated only about 15 yards from the river bank and it is .presumed the child wandered to the bapk and fell into the water.Farm Laboiirer's Death Shoxtly after 2 o'Clock on Thurs|day afternoon a fatal accident occurred nead Pongaroa. Th^ victim was:— Henry Colston Heath, fa'rm labourer, aged- 29 years,' single. Deceased, who was 'a fefurned serviceman, was travelling to Pongaroa along the main road from Pahiatua in a motor truck driven by Terence Mongahan, ot Pongaroa. He was sitting in the rear of the vehicle with Mr. H. J. Herbert, of Pongaroa, when it left the road and capsized into the Pongaroa River, approximately 50 feet below the roadside. Deceased and Mr. Herbert were both pinned beneath the truck under the surface of the water. Mr. Herbert managed to extricate himself but deceased did not. The body could not be released until the assistance of a tractorwas obtained about / two'.hours later, * . . ; v -
