Coal Strikers Remain Adamant
AUCKLAND, September 2. The men froni the Mm'donald, Gleu At'ton and Pukemiro mines decided to remaili on strike when they met in the ! Huntly Town HalJ this inorniug. Only al)OUt 200 of the 000 men empl'oyed at the three idle mines attended the ineeting. A spokesman of the strikers' committee said the meeting reafEirmed the previous decision to s-tay on strike, by a inajority of more than four to one. Other reports, hosvever, were tliat the voting was 145 to 54. The strikers' meeting deeided again to request the natiomj.1 cxec-utive of the Uliited Mine Workers' Hnion to visit Huntly to discUss the dispute. Declining a previous request, the National executive suggested that the strikefs aeeept the inajority decision of the Northern Miners' Union to return to work and have the dispute settled either by the local or national displites committee. ' - Coal from the other orthodox mines nnd opencaat mines at Huntly, is still reachirig Auckland in sufficient quautities to keep iitdustry going on a haUd to mouth basis. The Railwavs Department in Auckland has three days' stock in resefve and experts to be'able to keep going without production from the idle mines.
