INVERCARGILL, Sept. 1. The ITawke's Bay Rugby team was defeated bv Southland today by 14 to S in a bright game plaved in perfcct eonditions. Southland, whicli fielded practically a new baek line, showed improved forni and never seemed itt danger of dcfeat. hooked well and Fraser played a fine game in the forwards. The first seore was a.penaltv goal by Chapman for Hawke 's"Bay but at halftime Southland led 11 to 3 — a penalty goal by W ebster, a try by Harper and a try by Creedy converted by Webster. In the second half Webster kicked a penalty for Southland and T. Ingram scored a try for Bay which was converted by Chapman.
