Levin Entrants At Manawatu Competitions

Severa'l talented young Levin entrants gained distinction in the first two nights of the Manawatu Competitions Sopiety's festival qf songs, elocution, dancing and instrumental iterhs, which is being held at Palmerston Nprth. The standard of entries was high, and those from Levin acquitted themselves well, carrying off a nqmber of awards. An ou'tstandirig section in the first night/s performance was the charapter recitail* for ' boys between the age of 12 and 17. This was won by Marshall Maher, with 112 points. He showed how Tom Sawyer persuaded his friends to whitewash hi's aunt's frqnt* fence. Marshall also took 'first equal in the reading at sight competition, for children of 12 to 14 years, yut*1 Jenni'fer Hyde, of' Palmerston North. In the humorous recitatipn for boys under 12 ypars, D.onal'd Shaw, pf Levin, was avyarded first with 72 points. John Elliptt " gained a very highly commended in the tap dance fpr phildren under eight years an'd in the classical ballet. He also gained a highly commended in the national 'dance competition. Thprose Quinn annpxed first place in the~'girls' recitation, 12 to 14- years, and Robyn Thornley thifd ip the sapie ppmpptition.
