Highly Successful Trotting Club Meeting
Despite a wet and cold night, a satisfactory number attended the meeting of members of the Otaki Trotting Ciub, held at the Commercial Gardeners' rooms, at Otaki, on Saturday night. The president, Mr. J. Bebington, occupied the chair and gave an interesting resume of his attendance at, and address before the Gaming Commission recently. He expressed pleasure in that the commission had recommended that if extra dates were allotted, Otaki's claims should receive immediate consideration, due to the manner in which successful matinee meetings had been run at Otaki prior to the~ war years. Mr. Bebbington also related the ouLccme of his attendance at a conferenee of trotting clubs in Auckland, and was pleaSed to report on the actual help giv'en, and further support offered by the Wellington Trotting Club. He sald that the time was opportune for Otaki to come to a decison as to twhat steps to take to ensure that thqre would be no further recess, but rather that the time had arrived to make plans to forge ahead. The president was of the opinion that the next important move should be to find guarantors for a meeting. This would give the necessary weight to any claims presented to the Trotting Conferenee for the granting of a permit to hold such a meeting. Other speakers supported the, president's progressive policy, and Mr. Bebbington was roundly applauded for his sterling efforts on the club's behalf. Concrete evidence of this support was given when, following the appointment of a sub-committee to investigaie the guarantee position, 80 per cent. of the estimated amount was guaranteed at the meeting. Tne sub-committee is to contact other members and supporters, who were not present, to strengthenthe pcsition. Prior to concluding the meeting, Mr. Bebbington expressed his great pleasure at the outcome of the evening's deliberations. A further • generai meeting is to be cailed in the near future, when it is expected that executive members of the Wellington Trotting Ciub will be in attendance and advise as to ihe most suitable type of programme to be drawn up.
