Small Increase Granted In Price Of Jams
AVELLIN GTUN, August 17. A small increase to the nianufacturer in the price for jam, has been granted by the Price Tribunal but exc'ept m.the case of jams containing raspberry, the wliole amount of the increase is to be absorbed by the wholesaler. - ^ For the consumer the eli'ect of the decision will be to inerehse the price 'of jams with raspberry by one peuny per 21b tin and to reduce the -ipr.iee oi most other jams by a halfpenny per tui. The Price Tribunal \s office, explaiu _ ing .the decision, said the New Zealaii-. Fruit and Vegetable Canners ' Eedera lion applied for authority to increase b.v 7 h per cent. overall, the pj'i'ces of all lines of jam inanufactured by members of the federation. The federation als" asltod for- fnrtlier increases in tlie pric".of jams containing raspberry. Tln grounds of the application were mcreased costs of labour, freight, coal, cans, sugar, cases and lead. The in increased costs quoted by the manu facturers totalled £92,054. Tlie Tribunal, by its decision, granted relief to the extent of £18,361 by wav. of a reductiou of the manufacturers ' discount to the wholesaler from 10 per cent. orilinarv :erms to 7 1 per cent. ordinary terni.s.v There would be a reduction of the pricc 10 thc consumer for most jams except raspberry, to the extent of a halfpenny per 21b. tin. The increase granted for jamcontaining raspberry was allowed fo compensate manufacturers for the increase in price granted to growers of raspberries. The Tribunal 's decision is effeetive •from August 30.
