Honesty Boxes For Trams In Auckland
AUCKLAND, August 16. "Honesty" boxes to enable passengers to pay fares not collected by conductors, are to be placed on all Auckland trams. This was deeided at a meeting of the Auckland Transport Board when the manager, Mt C. R. Gribble, reported on tests from which it was estimated the boxes would provide fa net annual revenue of £600. The average daily revenue of trial boxes on straight shift cars was 3d and on hroken shift cars 2d, said Mr. Gribble. These amounts appeared very low but they represented a potential annual gross revenue of about £1400 if all trams were fitted with boxes. From this should he deduCted the cost of collection say £416 a year and £294 as a proportion of the cost of the boxes, leaving a net revenue of1 £690. As this was revenue the board could not otherwise expect to obtain, he recommended that boxes be fitted to all trams. '
