Womeri's Division Meets The monthly meeting of the Levin branch of the Women's DiV'ision of Fe'derated Farmers was held recently, with a large dttendance of mdmbers. Mrs. A. M. ■ Colquhoun presided. Plants and seedlings were on sale and brisk business Was done. Mrs. C. Bartholomew gave a report on the recerit Dominion conference held in Dunedin. «• AfternOon tea ! was dispensed by ' the hostesses, MesdamesW. S. Lon^H. ' J. 'Lancaster, P. Routley and C. Rartholomew. New Cargo Vessel The twin-screw f motor cargo liner Cumberland o£ 11,300 tons has been launched forr. the> Federal Steam Navigation • Company at Govan. The Cumberland will trade between Britain, Australia and New Zealand catrying general cargo, meat, butter, fruit, reggs and other r.efrigerated cargo. She is the sixth of a series of eight similar vbssbls recently completed- or at present under constructioh for the Federal Steam Navigation Company and the New Zealand Shipping dompany. Junior W.I.'s Meeting The monthly meeting. of the Levin Junior Circle of the Women's Institute was presided over by Miss M. Clapcott. Mrs. McLean, of Ihakara, gave an interesting demonstration of the. art of makiiig bread brooches. This ihe members thoroughly enjoyed as:it;;g£tye therii .he opportunity of making the flowers as they were demonstrated. The results of the monthly competition were: Miss M. Clapcott 1, Miss M. Po.well 2, Misses D. Johnson and D. Davies 3 (equal). The] competition for the next meeting is a bread brooch and members are reminded to bring a cup. Could Not Be Kept Several months ago ~a young woman pfoceeding to work at Ohakune found a dead bir'd dn the roadside and, because of its pretty markings, picked it up and took it oO her place of employment instead of leaving it to- the mercy of the first cat that passed. The bird was identified as a shiriing cuckoo and was handed to dn Ohakune dr'hithologist, who sent the bir'd to & taxidermist to be preserved. At the same time he wrote a letter to the Department of Internal Affairs seeking permission to retain the bird, which is required by law, as the shinihg cuckoo, a migratoiy bird, is regarded as a native specimen. This was refused and in accordance with the department's instructions the bifd has .beeri placed in the Wanganui Museum. OWnership Of Racehorse In a reserved judgment delivered by the Hon. Mr. Justice Stanton in the Supreme Court at Palhiefstbn North, this week, the decisidn of the magistrate, Mr. A. M. Goulding* S.M., was upheld iii the case ih which Briaii L. Eyer'tbn (Levin) proceeded agaispt Gi'aeiiie Evertdh (Foxton), an infant at law, claiming possession of a racehorse named Te Ranui, or alternatively £300. The magistrate had given judgment for the respondent. The magistrate held that the horse had been a gift frOiri aphe'llaiit td respondent and after reviewing the evidence the Judge upheld his view. The appeaL was dismis6ed with ddsts.
