Empire Games Will Cost At Least £50,000
WELLINGTON, August 12. Offieial advice tliat tlie 1950 BHtish Empire Games have been allottecl to Kew Zealand, was received todav by M r. II. Aiuos, seeretary of the New Zealaud Olyuiple and British Empire Games Associatiou. Tlje cable from Mr. D. T. Woodlield, manager of the New Zealand tearn, advising this, stated that the tentative date was the third weeTc in Jaiiuarv. It is expeeted the association will have diseussions with the Government shortlv regarding the \enue of the Games. Auckland and Christchurch have "alreadv .made applieat iona. The Games are expeeted to cost up- i wnrds of £50,000. . Both Auckland and Christchurch have raised guarantees. At diseussions held between the association and the Priine Minister some time ago, it was indicated that the Government would be prepared to assist financially if necessary. In his cable Alr. Woodfield added that Doug Ilarris might not be discharged from hospital before the' team left England. 011 its return journey about August 24. Ilowever, all arraugements had beeu made for his welfare.
