A cornplaiht about what he descr.beeL as the. uneafe condition of '; klbert Rbad, Tokomaru, was made; by Mr. A. N. Kelly, of Tokomaru,' in 5a ietter received at the monthlyi tiieeting of the. Horo whenua Countyi CoLincix yesterday.. One day durjng Juiy, safd MrJ Ke^y's lettei, he. had beexi drivmg up che roa.d and had met a cream. Lrry comlng dcwn lt. The roa.d was •aangerousiy narrow, especlally for passing heavily-laden trucks. His-car had been considerably damaged by belng forced oif the metal into. the "so-ealled ' water tabie, which was a drain about 12 inches de.ep and covered with long grass. The car had been yiolently smashed against Lhe bank by the sudden drop. Mr. Kelly a'dded that applications had repeatedly been lodged to have the road made safe and useable. If no move was taken by the council he wouid have to con.sider what further actioii he couid take. He was writing to his insurance company suggesting that the state of the road probably entitled them to collect the, cost of damages to the car, The road was not quite as bad as one would thiiik, an'd the plabe where the accident occurre'd was quite a good stretch with ample room for two vehieles to pass, repprted the engnieer, Mr. W. H. Fraser. S:-nqe the accident the worst portion of the road had been improved. He could not agree with the engineer in the view that the road was wide enough, said Cr. J. H. P. Liggins. The actual width of the road where the accident had occurred was only 13 feet. However, had care been exercised by both drivers, the accident need not have happened. As for the statement that the watertable had been overgrown with grass, he would defy a rabbit to surviye on wh.at was there. There was an excellent view of the road for some distance ahead. It was unfortunate that the accident had occurred, said the chairman, Mr. A. M. Colquhoun, but everyope realised that, when driving

a' car, they should use all due .care. A deeision was made to write to Mr. Kelly and say that the council would do what it could in the matter.
