COUNTY ADMINISTRATION
Horowhenua Council Meets . -v Y The August meeting of the Horowhenua County Council was held at Levin yesterday, the chairman, Mr. A. M. Colquhoun/ presiding. Present were: Crs. D. K. Guy, L. F. Brown, E> R. Winkier, R. W. .Jenkins, A. M. Atkins, J. D. ' Aitchison, J. H, P. Liggins and W. G. Taylor. Also Messrs. F, H. Hudson (clerk) and W. H. Fraser (engineer) . Extra Street Lights A letter was received from the Horowhenua Electric Power Boaid, advising that orders had been-. placed for the necessary equipment for the installation of additional street lights. The work would be put in hand as early as possible. However, continued the letter, since the lifting of the restrictions, the board had received applications for some 70 lights throughout its district, and it would not be possible to complete the whole of the council's requirements before dolng some of the others. In moving that the letter be received, the chairman remarked that the lights would be installed in due course. * * A letter from the Horowhenua Scottish Society, soliciting a grant towards the upkeep of the society's pipe band, brought forth a great deal of discussion. The chairman said that the council recognised the wonderful job the band had done, -particu-. larly through the war years: However, as far as the council was concerned it had not the authority to make grants, unless from the unauthorised fund. Members spoke of the good work the band was still doing throughout the district. Cr. Aitchison was of the opinion that it was time the council went into the matter of making dona-' tions. The ratepayers' monies werefor use in maintaining roads • aird culverts. The matter was left to the finance committee to bring down a report at the next meeting. General Matters The Post and Telegraph Department, Waikanae, wrote drawing attention to the fact that a heage on a property in Beach Road, Waikanae, was interf ering with the . telephone, thus interrupting telephonic communication. The hedge is one on some property taken for the widening of the road, and is under the jurisdiction of the council. It appeared as if ' the hedge was the council's responsibility, commented the chairman. The engineer was authorised to have the hedge cut. He would be pleased if the council would * do something to require the r.emoval of stocks of firewood and coal on Waihou Road, Levin, said Mr. F. H. Best, of Levin, in a letter. There was a danger from fire and the stuexs con- . stituted a nuisanee to both stock and traffic. The road in question , was a loop off Arapaepae Road, commented the chairman. It was decided to refer the matter to the engineer to inspect and report back to the next meeting.
